When pictures started moving

1st to 4th grade, 4 units

How do you get pictures to move?
What is a laterna magica?
How does a zoopraxiscope work?
Why were toys of the 19th century important for the development of movies?
We will embark on a trip back in time to search for the very first moving pictures.  On this journey we will visit ancient Egypt, China, and then onward to France.  In a playful manner, we will recreate the history of moving pictures by retracing the steps ancient artists took to capture movement, on to the first real movies.
We will tell stories with a laterna magica, do shadow puppetry, build a zoopraxiscope, and try out thumb cinema and even a mutoscope box.
